ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

1. Diagnosis

Make sure that you have a medical diagnosis that confirms that you have lymphedema.
Please note that we do not perform surgery on patients with pitting edema. 

2. Local lymph therapist

Make sure that you have a good lymph therapist close to home. You will need help both before and after surgery.

3. The medical team

Once accepted and we have settled agreements and payment we will plan for your consultation. Our dedicated team at Skåne Care will answer any questions and help you through the process up until this time.

4. Planning

Plan your trip to Sweden. We are here to guide you and recommend both accommodation and leisure activities. You will need to meet with the medical team in person, approximately 1 month before surgery. 

Once in Sweden

You will arrive in Sweden a minimum of 5 days before your procedure to have time for MRB screening.

The lymphedema team is located in Uppsala, located about 30 minutes away from the Stockholm Arlanda airport.

Once arriving at the clinic in Uppsala, you will be met with a top quality team. All the surgeons are experienced specialists, and the nurses are specialised in anesthesia, perioperative and intensive care.

As a national guideline we ask that you complete a MRB (multi resistance bacteria) screening before surgery. You will also meet your doctor for an in-person consultation to make sure you are all set and ready for surgery.

You will be admitted as an inpatient at the clinic in the morning of your surgery. Surgery will be performed under general anesthesia and takes about 3 hours.

A series of small incisions are made through which fat is suctioned out. The incisions are small enough not to require sutures.

Once the surgery is completed, a compression garment is applied and to be changed another three times throughout your stay.

You will stay at the clinic as an inpatient for 3 nights after the surgery. After that you can move to a comfortable hotel nearby if you’re feeling well enough.

You will meet with the medical team 7 days after your surgery, before you are discharged and ready to travel home.

The compression garment needs to stay on all day and all night and can only be removed for showering/bathing. The team at the clinic will inform you exactly on how to handle this.

You will be required to travel back to Sweden for a minimum of 4 follow-up appointments. This will be scheduled about 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after your surgery. The follow-up appointments are very important, to prevent relapse and ensure that the compression garments continues to fit perfectly.

Should further follow up care be needed it will be done over Skype, preferable together with your local lymph therapist.

Compression garment

To obtain the best result you need to wear the compression garment and you need to make sure that they are fitted perfectly at all time or the won´t have enough effect and your lymphedema will return.
